Will there be problems upgrading RAM on 4 year old computer?

My computer, which is 4 years old, has a puny 512 megs of RAM. Since it's so old what's the possibility of there being problems upgrading to 2 or even 4 gigs of RAM? How will it affect everything else, like the CPU and video card?
